Caring Beyond Birth: The Nurse’s Role in Perinatal Mental Health Support presented by FamilyWell

Labor & delivery nurses play a critical role in supporting families through pregnancy and birth—yet many perinatal mental health needs emerge or intensify well after discharge.

In this free for MOVE participants, Continuing Education (CE) webinar, FamilyWell and Bundle Birth partner to examine perinatal mental health across pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Led by Dr. Marissa Caan, a Reproductive Psychiatrist and FamilyWell’s Medical Director; and Cierra Murphy, a FamilyWell Certified Perinatal Behavioral Health Coach (PBHC) and mentor, this session provides a clinically grounded, trauma-informed overview of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and explores how nurses can support patients within interdisciplinary care models and beyond the bedside.

Marissa Caan & Cierra Murphy

FamilyWell Health, Cierra Murphy-Higgs, MS, EdS, IBCLC, PBHC, brings over a decade of experience in programming, counseling, and education, along with her credentials as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Perinatal Behavioral Health Coach (PBHC). In her work with FamilyWell, she provides direct coaching support to patients and serves as a coach mentor for PBHC students within the FamilyWell Academy, supporting the development of ethical, evidence-informed coaching practice. Dr. Marissa Caan is a board-certified, Harvard-trained reproductive psychiatrist with expertise in the pharmacological management of psychiatric conditions across the female reproductive lifespan. She is the Medical Director at FamilyWell and continues to see patients for psychotherapy and psychopharmacology in her small private practice. Her work is informed by psychoanalytic concepts, which she integrates on the patient-doctor level and in understanding dynamics on the organizational level. As the mother to a toddler herself, she understands first-hand how new parenthood can be both profoundly joyful and deeply challenging. In her roles as psychiatrist and parent, she has learned that embracing this duality and giving space for the darkness ultimately makes room for more light to shine.
